Donald Trump Persists in Criticism on Marjorie Taylor Greene Amid Push to Release Epstein Documents

Greetings and salutations to the US politics live blog. I am Tom Ambrose, and I will be bringing you all the latest news lines over the next few hours.

Trump Rejects Greene's Danger Concerns

We start with the development that Donald Trump doubled down on his attacks against GOP congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on Sunday, despite his reversal on opposing the release of the Jeffrey Epstein documents.

He persisted in rejecting her claim that his remarks were putting at risk her and said he did not believe anyone was targeting her. The congresswoman said on Saturday that the President's social media posts had unleashed a wave of menaces directed at her.

“Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Greene,” he remarked, speaking of the congresswoman. “I do not believe her life is in danger... I doubt anybody cares about her,” the president informed reporters before boarding his presidential plane on Sunday evening.

Greene, a US House of Representatives member from the state of Georgia who was long known as a Trump loyalist, has lately taken positions contrary to the president. She noted on the weekend she has been contacted by security companies warning about her security and that harsh attacks against her have previously led to threats on her life.

Jeffrey Epstein Documents Disclosure Initiative

This dispute occurred while Trump urged his GOP colleagues in the legislature to vote for the release of records concerning the deceased disgraced financier Epstein, reversing his prior resistance to such a move.

His message on his social media platform followed Speaker Johnson said earlier that he thought a vote on releasing justice department files in the Epstein investigation should help put to rest allegations “that he [Trump] has any involvement”.

He posted on his social media account on that day: “GOP lawmakers should vote to release the Epstein documents, because we have nothing to hide.

“Now is the moment to move on from this political stunt orchestrated by Radical Left Lunatics in order to deflect from the Great Success of the GOP, including our recent Victory on the Democrat ‘Shutdown’,” he said.

Although the President and Epstein were photographed together decades ago, the president has said the two men had a disagreement before Epstein's legal troubles. Messages released last week by a congressional panel showed the convicted sex offender, who took his own life in prison in recent years, believed Trump “knew about the girls,” though it was not clear what that statement meant.

Additional Developments

  • GOP representative Thomas Massie had challenged Trump over whether the commander-in-chief was making a “final attempt” to keep the complete records on the deceased convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein from becoming public by initiating a fresh investigation. Massie and Democratic representative Ro Khanna, the two US representatives spearheading the cross-party effort to have all the documents held by the authorities available both raised fresh concerns about the actions by the administration.
  • US forces conducted another attack on an alleged narcotics smuggling boat in the eastern Pacific on the weekend, resulting in the deaths of three individuals aboard, the Pentagon said on the following day. “Intelligence verified that the vessel was involved in illegal drug trafficking, transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and transporting narcotics,” the US Southern Command stated in a post on social media.
  • The President said the United States may open talks with President Maduro, the Venezuelan president, who is under escalating pressure from Washington during a significant US military buildup in the Caribbean. “We may be having some discussions with Maduro, and we’ll observe how that develops. They would like to talk,” the commander-in-chief remarked on that day, in one of the first signs of a possible path to easing the growingly strained situation in the area.
  • Donald Trump on Sunday dismissed worries about conservative commentator the commentator's recent discussion with a extremist figure recognized for his antisemitic views, which has created a schism within the GOP. Trump supported Carlson, saying the former Fox News host has “expressed good things about me in the past.” He said if Carlson wants to interview Nick Fuentes, whose supporters see themselves as defending America’s white, Christian identity, then “people have to make up their own minds.” Trump did not condemn the commentator or Fuentes.
  • The President indicated on that day that he plans to meet with NYC's mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and stated they will “reach an agreement”, in what could be a truce for the Republican president and Democratic political star who have cast each other as opponents. Trump has for months criticized the mayor-elect, falsely labelling him as a “communist” and forecasting the ruin of his hometown, NYC, if the democratic socialist were elected.
  • A collective of 17 transgender US air force members has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for refusing them retirement benefits and benefits. The complaint, submitted in a US court, characterizes the administration's action against them as “unlawful and invalid”.
